not sure what type/brand you got a bid on, but definitely shop around- window prices vary wildly from seller to seller even for the same product, and quite often the places offering package deals like you see advertised in the TV Guide and in flyers are costlier in the long run than going to a dedicated door and window store.
and consider all options...
one good thing about having old aluminum sliders is that you can get retrofit vinyl units that pop into andseal to the old frame, and they aren't that hard to DIY if you are the least bit handy and know how to use a level and basic tools.
They aren't the fanciest things on earth but even so they'd be a lot more in keeping with the look you want, and even the cheapest modern vinyl windows are more efficient than old aluminum sliders.
Also, any of the windows you have that are fixed picture windows can probably be trimmed out to look like what you want without having to purchase an entire new window and and pay to install it.
If they work for you, I'd suggest looking at double hung windows...if you take that horrible pic I did and draw a horizontal white line across the middle of the two windows in front like you'd see if they had hung sashes, you'll see that it instantly takes away a bunch of the 80's cheeseiness and makes the place look more traditional.
